Some of you have been wondering why you haven't seen a post. I'm still here and I'm still blogging, yet I've created two new blogs. Here's one that explains more about networking and how you can help your career, business, friends, etc...

I want to be clear that although I'm personally ok with the network marketing distribution model, this blog, Build Relationship Build Income - brbIncome.blogspot.com, is about social networking in a business context, NOT network marketing. Some network marketers think they own the word networking, but I'm not going to get deeply into that. If you would like to reach your goals faster, I suggest networking. Help others meet the people they'll benefit by meeting and be ok with receiving the same kind of help in return.

The second blog is brby.blogspirit.com and it's related to brbIncome. I ask contributors to send in their words on "Build Relationship Build You". It might just help you with some of the "how" in networking. I believe that personal growth can only benefit your life path, including choices you make about your business and career.

I'm going to get back to teaching B.A.H.N. in the next post. I just got off the phone with Dev Ivie in Washington a little while ago. I just checked my network at LinkedIn and found that I have my 149th direct person who just happens to be my brother, Mike Hicks, who is in real estate in Washington. Deb Ivie is in Washington, too. And coincidentally, we have Washington's typical weather here in San Diego County while the sun is shining up there. We actually had a small tornado about 25 miles from here over the weekend. Today the sister-in-law called to tell us not to come south because of the gale force winds! I've lived here all my life and I don't remember weather as extreme as this for this long.

No lightning, though, so I'm still on the computer.

I've been coaching Deb Ivie several times a month to grow her income and herbalife business at a faster rate while living the kind of life she wants to live. I spoke at an business dinner last night in Temecula, California. My talk was billed as "The Heart and Soul of Networking". Take it from me, you can change your situation dramatically through effective networking.

As far as I'm concerned, that now starts with LinkedIn.com. You can get much faster results because you're connected to someone who's connected to someone and you are introduced via the internet. Right now I am connected to just under a million people through four degrees of relationship. I am connected directly to two new people as of this morning which brings the total of my direct connections to 137. The number of people on my second degree which includes all those directly connected to those on my first degree [direct relationships to me] is 6,100+. Three degrees away the total is 200,100+. Anyone who directly links to me has that number on their fourth degree even if they're linked to no one else directly. My fourth degree total is 741,500+ and there are 29,900+ users who can be contacted without a referral [brave bunch!] for a grand total of 977,900+ people in my network at LinkedIn.com. Within an hour or so, that grand total will grow by hundreds of people because new connections are being added all the time.

The power of this is huge. You have an ocean of people you can connect with. If you're unsure, you can start growing your LinkedIn network two ways. First, by inviting people who are your trusted associates or people with great skill sets you would recommend to other people. Second, you can send a request through the LinkedIn system to meet someone who is directly Linked to someone you're directly Linked to. That's what would happen in a restaurant. "Hello Bill! This is Patricia and she's got something that could really be of value to you in what you're currently doing."
That's how I started last March after being introduced to LinkedIn.com by Gary Dale Cearley in Vietnam. Gary was kind enough to set up an automatic reminder every ten days which I received starting in January! I finally got it.

Is there a catch? Well, if you sign up by yourself, you're connected to zero people, but if you receive an invitation, that person's first three degrees are part of your network. So, who do you know that will send you an invitation to LinkedIn?

I was networking with a great group of people at a Cannon Training event on Saturday and I got re-connected with Dr. Ida Greene of People Skills International Foundation. She's making a difference in a lot of lives and the New Year's Resolution Link below is for an event her organization is hosting to raise funds to serve children. Networking will help you meet great people in lots of different industries. When you use a tool like LinkedIn.com to keep connected with your contacts, you can help someone connect with a person that maybe you didn't see an obvious connection to at first. Maybe you're in software and someone else is in swimwear! When you open yourself up to helping others and not simply working to further your own agenda, you do people good beyond just dollars and cents. You also make CONNECTIONS TO CONNECTIONS and that is huge in the long run. Many people who are not obvious choices to connect will find themselves side by side in the non-profit world. Most successful people are using some of their time to further a cause or two or three. So do some good by connecting with people you enjoy but have no obvious business connection to, and you'll help someone make a connection through your network. They'll do the same for you.

I have a connection to Chris on LinkedIn and a chiropractor named David contacted me less than two weeks ago through Chris, our mutual connection. David is finding out how a tool I use could be of help in marketing his business and enhancing his clients' experiences with his office. Check it out:

Keep in mind that David found me. I didn't go looking for him. David is also looking at what Cannon Training can do for him and his wife. Because of LinkedIn, he came to me. How many of you would like potential clients or business associates "knocking on your door" instead of the other way around? Think about it.

Looks like the major computer problems are behind me and I've really enjoyed working online with Yoshimi Battles The Pink Robots, Do You Realize?, Thank You Jack White, and the rest of The Flaming Lips album playing in the background. You can listen at:

When I first started using the internet around 8 years ago, I actually worked with the sound turned down. I know. I'm an interesting guy...I've never been someone who illegally downloaded music and I really appreciate groups like The Flaming Lips who make that music available for you to check out. I first heard Yoshimi Battles The Pink Robots several months ago and I was wowed. I finally decided to search "Yoshime" when I heard it again the other day on 91X. Now I'm listening to it while I write this. How cool. Yoshimi to me sounds like a combination of America, The Buggles, ELO, The Art of Noise, and smidgens of The Partridge Family and possibly Kraftwerk. I saw Sideways with my sweetie last night and the way they tasted the wine and noticed subtle ingredients reminds me of The Flaming Lips music on this album. In The Morning Of The Magicians makes me think a little bit of Neil Young. There are more ingredients I haven't identified yet. I will definitely purchase this music.

One of the great networking tools that I use while I listen to Yoshimi and the rest is a program that lets me send out greeting cards in the "live" world by punching in the information online. You can keep your contact list online and send "real world" greeting cards to people with some keystrokes. I sent a card this morning as I have most mornings this week and it's not just a great way to keep in touch in this increasingly, incredibly high-tech age. Sending out a positive, sincere message is a great way to start your day. It's a bargain compared to buying a greeting card in the store and the beautiful fonts are much better than my handwriting.

People have almost universally thanked me for the beautiful cards. Except one of my relatives, of course! People at church sought me out to thank me for the card. My network spinal analysis chiropractor loves them for herself and her clients. You can also create income with these greeting cards if you choose to go that route. I'm sure you know lots of people in business who could use these. You can join me in business or you can send them to me if you prefer and I'll help them get more organized and create a higher retention rate among their customers. It's amazing how putting smiles on people's faces can brighten your life, too. This is a tool that makes things easier and that's something I like.

Blog stuff-
The more I use StatCounter.com, the more I love it. Use this counter for your blogs and websites if you must choose only one. Using it has also allowed me to see how effective another site is. If you use BlogExplosion or something like it, you will see an increase in traffic to your sites by using TrafficPods. It's similar to BlogExplosion in that when you introduce someone to the site through your affiliate link, you receive traffic based upon a fraction of that person's efforts. A difference is that you're not simply viewing blogs, but lots of different [and some not so different] websites. So it's another way we can help each other while we help ourselves.

I hope you know that the first rule of brainstorming is that there are no wrong answers. Everyone can contribute and no one is shut down by responses like "That's a nutty idea." It takes some practice for some people to get this idea. It seems like writing down all the answers whether they seem unlikely or not is a waste of time. Brainstorming is about opening up our creativity, not shutting it down. Potentially great solutions can come out because someone's comment reminded someone else of something incredible. Technorati, Stickiness, Remembering and LinkedIn again

Some folks are chomping at the bit for me to get back to my B.A.H.N. paradigm and that's coming soon. For those of you who are new to the web or blogs, I urge you to read a few blogs everyday and even jump in and start your own. Just forcing yourself to write on a regular basis will make a difference in your communication skills. I find that committing all these words to the internet helps me remember things, too. We have associations in our brains and given enough words and pictures that you use in this process of blogging, you'll remember some of the connections you haven't thought about in a while.

As for LinkedIn, Jim McClendon responded to my response to his blog and soon we'll be networking through LinkedIn together. Some really serious businesspeople like Paul Allen won't even consider talking to you unless you're on LinkedIn in the first place. I guess that's part of his screening process to make sure you can do things quickly and have at least a basic level of technological understanding. I am finding that I have to coach some of my associates in using the web and blogging and when you coach people you can earn more income or deepen relationships or both.

A lot of my traffic comes from BlogExplosion. If you haven't signed up for it you can sign up by clicking on the title of today's post above. I do receive visitors from other sites, though. Technorati is one of them. I recommend really exploring it and connecting your blog to it. One interesting idea is simply mentioning Technorati [or LinkedIn, for that matter] in your verbage will get your blog noticed by Technorati. So, I expect I'll receive a few more visitors from Technorati very soon.

Another good source of traffic for my site is Clickthru.com. I realize that some of you bloggers may pooh-pooh it because a lot of opportunity seekers use it, but it is one of my highest traffic producers after BlogExplosion.com and I see more blogs on there all the time. It also has some interesting stuff like paying people for tasks. You can pay people a few credits for doing certain tasks on your site and you also receive credits as with BlogExplosion, so you'll want to sign up others. Here's my referral link for Clickthru.com:

One of the great things about Branica.com is the list of the top 20 sites where your visitors come from. I have noticed that as much as I love StatCounter.com's graphs for a visual understanding of what's going on, there is one thing that Branica.com does better. I like getting a count of people who visit your page through THEIR BOOKMARKS! I get really encouraged seeing that people are returning to my blog because they have bookmarked it. That's cool. With Sitemeter.com you will sometmes see the time someone stays at or "stickiness" of your site. Usually, Sitemeter shows a zero, which may have to do with so many people visiting through BlogExplosion surfing, or perhaps there is a technical issue that they haven't addressed. You can visit both of these sites by clicking the links at the very bottom left of the WeAreGrowing page.

Last but not least, I have also noticed traffic growing from another source through the back office of Branica - my other blogs. So, start another blog for a different audience or niche and link it back to your original blog. I've introduced over 100 people to LinkedIn and have invited [directly] more than 3 times that many. Some people get it right from the beginning. I urge you to sign up and take some time to get to know the site and see how you can invite more people who become automatically connected fairly easily through the address book page.

One person who has hit the ground running is Deb Ivie. If you're a member of LinkedIn, you can look up her profile. She's from the Portland, Oregon area and she's helping people make more money and improve their health. Deb has added 14 people besides me to her first degree at LinkedIn in around two weeks since joining. It doesn't matter if all you WeAreGrowing readers are interested in what Deb is doing. Perhaps a few are. It doesn't really matter what industry you're in, you can do the same thing that other WeAreGrowing readers have done. When you see the pie chart, it's more impressive and more, well, fun. You can make changes in your site if you are trying to reach a certain market. If you want to increase your chances of making money with your blog, this information can be very helpful.

I've noticed that later in the day that WeAreGrowing has a much higher percentage of visitors from North America. As you start looking at your results, you understand more of what's going on. It might seem foreign in the beginning, but you'll figure things out as you go. Use these tools! Explore them and be patient with yourself for not knowing everything and making mistakes along the way.

I really urge you to join BlogExplosion. So far I have received bonus credits of 25, 50 [twice], 100 [twice], along with all the little bonus credits and regular credits for surfing other people's blogs. For someone new to this it might seem hokey, but I am getting hundreds of visitors from BlogExplosion.

Some of you are wondering why I would title a blog this way when it's so obvious to you that you can receive WeAreGrowing free quite easily. Let's keep in mind that not everyone has the same level of understanding about the internet. The very same thing could be true in your business or career. Are you forgetting about the beginners? I was teaching a group of people about how they can use the internet to network their relationships the other night and realized how far I have come in the last couple years. I am a beginner with regard to blogging [- but I'm willing to learn!]
However, I have now been connected to the net for 8 years through email. [I still remember asking my roommate if he could "get me email" and he's even gone now. Eight years is a long time on the net.] I spoke about putting your profile up on the net through LinkedIn and there was not just a lack of knowledge, but resistance. Let's keep in mind what we know about what we know and not forget the perspective of someone new.

I read an article recently in the Harvard Business Review about negotiating and remembering the relationship you still want to have after the negotiations. When you force someone into a position that they don't want to be in, that's not good for the relationship. If your organization wants you to negotiate in a way that's most certainly detrimental to your relationships, circulate the article. Of course, the vast majority of us want to do right thing, but this article points out the smart business reasons that will appeal to everyone looking to improve the bottom line.

I can't find that article online, but if you go to the library, I know it's in the past two or three month's issues. Here's a little something from them:

Here at my blog and your website there's a dance of negotiation going on. How do we get you to participate more? To stay and interact with the site more? How do we conform the technology to the human beings as much as possible and not force the human beings to conform to the technology? I'm in search of this and if you want more fame, results or income for/from your site, you should be interested in this idea, too.

I'm amazed that Vons has these Disney ads on the surface of the pay machine at the checkout. These get in my way physically. I'm considering not going to Vons for a while if they don't get rid of them. You're forced to interact with the machine unless you pay cash and don't use your Vons club card. Plus, I don't really want another advertisement shoved in my face in the "live" world. I guess I'm used to it somewhat on the internet, but I don't enjoy that spillover with the grocery store checkout machine that I'm pretty much forced to use in order to get the best price. I'm sorry that Vons management made a very, very bad choice with their investment in a company that lost them in the neighborhood of $500 million and then punished their employees for their failure, but I'm not part of their corporate family. By the way, I didn't start out to talk about Vons. This just flowed out.

You should definitely join LinkedIn. If you're already a member, explore it - especially the "network" tab on your profile page. A year ago, Gary Dale Cearley in Vietnam sent me an invitation and he set the system to automatically send me another invitation every ten days. I finally joined in March as the email was being sent to an address that had simply become overwhelming. I have never met Gary "live". We were introduced through email by Devin Standard. So 10 months ago I joined and was immediately connected to Gary and indirectly connected to much of his network.

[For those of you who are constantly on the lookout for someone trying to take your money, this service is amazingly free.]

I've mentioned some of this before, especially in the following post:

From 1 direct connection last March, I have now 119 direct connections. This works like six degrees of separation, except only to four degrees. Now that you know the first degree, here are some more great numbers:
2nd degree - 4700+, 3rd degree - 153,900+, 4th - 621,600+, 29,700+ users who can be contacted without a referral, and total users in my network now stands at 810,200+.

If you're not a little amazed at the power of LinkedIn, maybe you should be. You can connect with those people if you have something relevant to say. You send a request through someone you are directly connected to and we act as screeners for each other so that only relevant requests are passed on. Just like an introduction "live", but through the internet where a lot of relevant information about each other is right there.

Cannon Training - Great Start For the Year!

What a great night last night! Sometimes I have trouble going to sleep after a gathering like last night. Our goal is for at least 1000 people to go through Cannon Training and Development's Magnificent Life Programs in the coming months.

Just yesterday my son, who has grown from a toddler to a teenager since I first got involved with the work in 1993, told me how wonderful he thinks this goal is. He's heard me talk about Cannon Training and the work that goes on for over a decade. When he was small, he referred to our seminar rooms as "The Dancing Place". He "got it" at age three. And now he "gets" the "why" of it. I went from still thinking of myself as a big kid at age 30 to understanding that I was and am an adult. I learned how special and even sacred that time is when you're holding your baby son at 2 am while your wife is sleeping so she can get up in 3 1/2 hours to go teach. [I'm actually tearing up as I type.] If you've never done this kind of work, you really don't know what you're missing.

Or how to give your 100% in a relationship whether the other person is doing 100% or not. I'm just about to leave for a class I teach to 6th thru 8th graders. I call it Speechmasters and it's sort of like a junior version of Toastmasters. It's not Speech and Debate, just public speaking. If you click on the title of today's blog, you'll link to Toastmasters International. I highly recommend it if you're scared to get up in front of a group or if you simply want to improve your speaking style.

Milestones for WeAreGrowing continued

Anyone else in this position? I'm using my son's computer this morning because of technical problems with mine! If you've sent me email, I am sorry I haven't gotten back to you. For years I never used an email client. I always got my email off the web. I love downloading that email to my computer now, but I cannot respond to it right now because it's on my computer, not my son's.

I've added Statcounter so that I can compare the tracking between it and Sitemeter.

If you search Google for WeAreGrowing, this site comes up #1! Woohoo!

Yesterday was my 30th post to this blog [31 doesn't seem like a milestone that's noted, but technical difficulties made me cut that post short].

I have apparently stepped up to a new level on traffic. I found that the early part of the day yesterday was not very busy. Page impressions went from the low 300's a few days ago to Jan 1- 727 , Jan 2- 871, Jan 3- 768. Some folks may not be impressed, but to more than double the traffic is great. If I do that every couple weeks, whew!

Someone visited WeAreGrowing by searching for "Trader Joe's Truffles" at Google! I mentioned them in an earlier post. I think that's funny and cool!

I will continue to comment on blogging and how you can improve your blog, but that will be a section in the future. I really am about personal and professional growth and I see that blogging will be huge in the future for many of you. If you're in business or want to further your career, you should absolutely start a blog and be ok with making mistakes. Shut it down if you don't like it.

Regularly expressing your thoughts, opinions, expertise, etc... is excellent for getting your creative juices flowing and the 21st century is rewarding creativity more than in the past. More and more every day in fact.

I'm now wrestling with my keyboard [I hope it's the problem], so you may notice some extra o's if I don't catch them all. My page impressions hit 871 yesterday as recorded by Google Adsense. Today it's not at that pace, so I'm thinking a couple things happened. New Year's WEEKEND and this site:

Because of the possibly poor response to my blog from yesterday, this one will be shorter and we'll see. I also broke my glasses and have one eye closed like a pirate as you read this! I can't believe that it's so hard to get a new pair of glasses any time soon.

My Andale counter has gone over 1000 which, according to them, means that over 1000 DIFFERENT computers have visited my site in the last few weeks. Nice. I switched to Site meter today so that I can see where the traffic is coming from. So far I recommend it. See you in a bit!

I started WeAreGrowing - the blog - in late November, 2004. Late December, 2004, I added Google Adsense to my tools. You'll notice that December 27th has a big jump in Page Impressions. That's when I figured out how to actually add Google Adsense to my WeAreGrowing blog page. That is, I figured out how to add the HTML that Adsense provided me to the Template in the back office of WeAreGrowing. I'm not exactly sure why, but the table below appears nice and neat in the back office and when I view it "live" over the internet, it's not so pretty. I guess I should have used Word.

I cut and pasted it from my back office at Adsense. I edited it and what you see starts with 5 page impressions per day. Seven days later it jumps to 306. It's mostly in that range with one notable dip on December 30th and it jumps again yesterday to over double. Today's reading is incomplete as it's around 1 pm Pacific time. My guess is 590 for today's final total. What caused the jump yesterday? New Year's Day? Posts at InstantBuzz? Some from BlogExplosion.com - [Join through my flashing link on the left near the bottom of my profile! That's how we help each other get traffic through BlogExplosion.] Maybe some from Blogrolling.com.
If I had to guess about yesterday's jump, I would say mostly posting with my website in my signature at InstantBuzz, about even from New Year's Day and BlogExplosion and just a bit of traffic from Blogrolling.com.

Also notice that a little bit of cash is being generated. The table shows an average of 3 cents a day and a total of 47 cents. Making money through Google Adsense is not my primary objective with this blog, but there is no reason why I shouldn't be making 100 to 300 times this amount in 6 months to a year. I expect to make at least 30 times this amount 6 months from now and we'll see. Remember, this is just one blog. I plan on starting another one just after this post. You can do this. You can use Google Adsense and other indicators like Blogrolling, BlogExplosion, and the Andale counter that you see a few posts away from the bottom of this page to keep score. Make it like a game and strive to get more "real" traffic. You can also make it a goal to have your content suit your audiences wants more closely so that a great percentage of them click on your Google Adsense ads. You've probably noticed that I mentioned Google Adsense several times today. Anyone guess how that might help traffic to this site? I don't intend on overdoing it like that in the future, but this is an experiment and I'll let you know the results.

Today's link in the title is a friend and business associate in Washington State, Jim Thomson. He's been a great help to me with technical issues regarding computers and some HTML and even sales and marketing. I introduced him to an entrepreneur I know named Tony Dohrmann who is seeking distributors for whole regions for his unique plug-and-go alarm product, Lasershield.

If any of you would like to build a network of distributors in your state, let me know. I personally think it's gonna be huge because it's what the Harvard Business Review calls a Blue Ocean market. A Blue Ocean market in this context means a market where no one else has the product you're marketing. In a book called Seeing What's Next, this is also mentioned when you have a product that is being improved in some way that no one else has done or is likely to do any time soon. It could be years before anyone else does what Tony Dorhmann is doing and then he'll be on to the next generation of his product. I think he'll probably just miss being one of the 40 richest men under 40 as I think he'll turn 41 about the time I expect that he'll sell his company. For those of you who haven't read all my WeAreGrowing posts, Tony Dohrmann is the gentleman I know who has raised over $9 million privately to fund his enterprise. Getting Ready to Get Ready?

One of the challenges that some people face is "getting ready to get ready". So many people want to have all their ducks in a row before they get going. As readers of my blog can attest, this is not a problem at WeAreGrowing. I am learning from experiences, victories & mistakes as I go. I urge you to do the same, especially when creating your blog or website. One reason why this strategy is a good fit for blogging is that creating a blog doesn't require a large investment of time or money.
You can waste a lot of time, but if you're interested in learning how to do this, you can learn by doing. The blogging experience is quite, well, experiential.

I want to remind you that I'm not a computer or programming whiz. I'm just a guy who looks and searches and finds out how to do the things I want to do. I know very little about the programming code that makes all this possible. I have learned <-b-r-> [without the hyphens] will allow you to place a vertical space or break in your text or between images. I know how to place those clickable links within the text that you occasionally see.

Most of the time I simply cut and paste the code. The key is remembering where you put the code so that you can remove it later. As you look at the following paragraph, remember, I cut and pasted the HTML which was provided by the blogroll people.

I absolutely love this new toy/code I've found through blogroll.com. Just like always, you can click on the title of today's blog to visit one of their links. All I did was cut and paste that URL into the space provided by blogger as I created this post in the WeAreGrowing back office. I would have had a hint at what a great service/product this is by looking at the bottom of their site to see this:

Blogging allows you to be more productive and impact more people. I find this process to be helpful in keeping my creative juices flowing. Another benefit is that people can see a little more of who you are and are more willing to get to know you and do business with you. I noticed blogs a while ago, but Google's Blogger finally caught my attention with a system which is as close to a no-brainer as possible [for now] and is wonderfully, free.

If you're concerned about too much of your information getting out through the internet, you can choose to keep your profile to a minimum. Some will say that it's already too late and you're living in a dream world if you think that your information isn't already out there. I published an online newsletter for a couple years and started an online, through email, networking group in 2000.

You can truly do some amazing things if you will allow yourself the opportunity to experiment. It's important to be ok with making mistakes. You can always shut down your blog if you don't like it. Feel free to contact me if you would like to enhance your business or career with a blog and/or website. You're also welcome to check out the start of another blog which is an experiment of sorts. All you have to do is click on the title of today's post to access that site. If you're wondering how to contact me, you can click on my profile and access my email from there. I have learned over the years that it's probably not a good idea to post your email address on the site itself if you want to avoid an explosion of spam.

I'm back at work today this afternoon. Right now I'm checking out some changes I've made to the template of WeAreGrowing.blogspot.com. For those of you who might be intimidated by this, I am merely following directions of Google Adsense. I took Fortran programming over 20 years ago and remember about .1% of what I learned in that class. I remember the gal from southeast Asia who wouldn't go out with me and the messaging system I found that would allow me to pop messages up on her screen, but not the programming.

...OK, it looks like very little is happening, but at least you're not looking at a bunch of gobbledygook [except for the actual intellectual content of this blog]. I'll keep making changes and add my comments to this "Let's see..." blog today. So far I have moved the links that start each blog closer together. At least something's happening.

Now we're getting somewhere! Some of you may argue with the location of the Google Adsense bar or the colors, but it is readable, and that's a start. I'll tweak the colors, but probably keep the location for a while. If you only visit my site once, you won't see the changes, so come back!

Some of you may be wondering about blogs like the last one. I want to let you know that it's ok to be learning. Many people are too afraid of making mistakes which usually means not doing anything or not making progress fast enough. So my sometimes offbeat sense of humor comes through on occasion and sometimes the imperfections are simply obvious. I have found that many people on the net want to know a little more about you in order to do business with you. Letting some of the imperfections show is one way that people can get to know me, and, some of you can gain more confidence in what you're doing. Maybe you'll start your own blog.

If you click the titles of recent blogs, you'll notice that almost all of them are active links to other sites. My blog title link immediately prior to this is a fairly sophisticated system of generating traffic to your websites and I have made good contacts in the short time I have been actually using it. A friend in Washington recommended it to me months ago and I was too busy at the time to stop and really listen about all the features. I recommend using and exploring that site and you'll find you generate not just traffic, but relationships. For you who are new to business, you will definitely find that you cannot simply hide behind the internet. People want to know and trust you in order to do business with you. Of course, there are exceptions for you sticklers, but it's much smarter to develop relationships than to keep adding new clients and let old clients be neglected.

I have a site which can be very helpful in maintaining relationships with clients and have also started a blog relevant to that site and marketing/business tips in general. Take a look at these sites:

Let me just say that I was blown away yesterday when I found myself on the phone with a man who told me that he was best man at Werner Erhard's second wedding as well as Godfather to one of his children. I have scheduled a meeting with a mentor of mine, Fran Cannon, founder of Cannon Training & Development.

If you network with the idea of helping other people, and surround yourself with people that do the same, you will find that most everything you want to achieve is achievable through those relationships and some work. You need to be open to helping people instead of just thinking about what they can do for you. "Can this person be my customer?" "What can he do for me?" "I'll bet she's got a lot of money to spend on my products." These thoughts and questions are not the way to build truly long-lasting relationships. Your relationships will be the key to your future as well as your present. You have to ask, though. I phoned a man I know who does business plans and asked him if he paid referral fees. He sent me an agreement within 24 hours. Another man in Colorado is working out the details with me for finding him the right real estate person in San Diego County because no one ever asked him if he pays referral fees before. Now he does. Because I asked.

OK. Now let's see how this new button goes. Please, let me know what you think. I hope that you will help me make my blog better and better. In education, they call this lesson study. Teachers critique both the good and not so good points of a lesson.
How did the students do with each part of the lesson. We're starting to do that in the US and it's already big in Japan and at least one European country that I don't recall at this moment.

...If there's a Trader Joe's near you, they have this great confection called Trader Joe's Truffles. Great stuff. Just look close at the label. I found out today that there are different flavors. Champagne [surprise!] flavor is good if you like that sort of thing.

I hit the wrong button or I have a mild virus because my Outlook Express now seems to have my emails randomly distributed! I came across the email that invited me to LinkedIn. It's the final reminder and I am definitely thankful that LinkedIn sends out a second notice. I think the system is incredible. I still can't believe it's free. I am blown away that the majority of people sign up and still don't get it. Make sure you sign up through a friend's invitation and invite your friends. You'll be connected through those friends to people you had forgotten about.

I guess I'm a little out of the loop. It seems she got ahold of the substitute teacher and was able to tell him everything he needed to know. Her back is still giving her serious trouble, and she's definitely not a whiny person. She's beautiful AND tough.
So, no trip to school for now...

I am blown away by all this blogging technology and trying out different things. The links above these words are now set to appear in every blog. What was that pin I used to see? PBP.GNFWMY - Please be patient. God's not finished with me yet. Hey, here's an idea. Anyone out there want to make some and send me one? That would be great!

Some of you are here to learn more about networking, personal growth, and income growth and you might be wondering about this mental meandering today. Consider it part of your personal growth. Everything in life cannot be go, go, go. I remember learning in History or Civics that the former Soviet Union tried to get people to work seven days a week for a while and found that they were more productive with one day off. It seems we all have a spiritual side that needs to be nurtured no matter what beliefs or religion we hold dear. So, this blog might not APPEAR productive today, but, maybe that's what you need right now.

I teach a class I call SpeechMasters for sixth through eighth graders at my son's home school program - CHEP (Community Home Education Program)- and I came up with a little saying with words repeating the same ending.

I even converted it to a formula:
V -> Ob(Con)

Vegetation produces Obliteration of Conversation. I've heard of alliteration which I'm pretty sure applies to the beginning of words. Does anyone know the name for words in succession [or close to it] with similar endings?

I'm a good kind of tired as they sometimes say. :-)

If you don't have a website, then now is like a new Oklahoma land rush. Start a blog. Don't be scared. Just a few words a few times a week. As you explore, you'll find sites you can be affiliated with which will make you money. You'll find sites that will bring more visitors [real people with real eyeballs - not "traffic" that so many are trying to rip you off with] and some of those visitors will be interested in those sites you have affiliate relationships with. Incidental Residual Income Generation - almost. IRIG. That's my acronym. Made it up myself. I've got a sweetheart who threw her back out and now it's time to cook some chili. I'll share more of this later. Keep coming back as the puzzle will begin to take shape. It's experiential learning. Learn by doing. It's ok to make mistakes. Have a great night!

I have been focusing more and more on networking for over four years. I ask others for references to just about everything. When someone introduces you to someone else, it's almost always better than finding something through a stranger's advertising. The last time I got a plumber through the phone book was probably 5 years ago and the guy was not someone that we would recommend to anyone based on his work. I really appreciate a friend of mine who told me that even though he knew people in a particular area of insurance, he couldn't recommend anyone if I was interested in the quality of customer service. The people he knew were honest people, but terrible at customer service.

Here's the comparison of my network at LinkedIn with the numbers for November 24th listed first in each case.

No matter how you slice it, I have recently added 5 people who are directly connected to me and they clearly have a large network of their own because being linked to them has grown my network by over 163,000 people. Keep in mind that this growth happened in just over a week. One of the five actually sent me a request to be linked, so it's not just me sending requests to others. After a certain point, your personal network becomes so large that you attract others simply because of size.

I'm excited about Cannon Training and Development's new strategy and I'm tired at the same time. We had a great get together again this week and the group of graduates is growing. I want to get some good inspirational information out right away, so I'll share something that hits my mailbox several times a week.

I start people on the coaching path through an acrostic for Brainstorming, Authenticity, Humor, and Networking - B.A.H.N. I believe that these are important starting points down the path. I looked up Bahn in an English-German dictionary and these are the first five entries.

What path are you on? Some of you may recognize the word autobahn, which is a famous roadway [path] in Germany which has no speed limit in some places. I've taken the auto off and simply use BAHN. Many people think that the automation available through technology is the same as AUTOMATIC. We need to remember that no relationships, whether business or otherwise, are automatic. So, I purposely leave the auto off.

Even with great technology like LinkedIn, networking is not automatic. I have been on the phone a few times already this morning, introducing myself to people who are connected to people connected to me. I've had some good success and look forward to a nice turnout for a breakfast I'm hosting starting in January. For those of you who are not connected to me at LinkedIn, now is a great time! I can coach you on how to use LinkedIn.com in a powerful way. Zig Ziglar says that "You can get what you want by helping enough people get what they want." Are you networking and helping people get what they want?

I love networking. I love helping people go to the next level in their project, goals, dreams, personal and professional growth. I have coached a woman through ICQ this week and referred her for further coaching to my mentor, Fran Cannon. They are likely finishing up their session as I write this. Transatlantic coaching!

With tools like a blog and a profile on LinkedIn, people can see more about you and decide that time is well spent connecting with you through email, instant messaging or on the phone. You know that you're legitimate and highly competent, but people need to feel good about you. Being connected to people let's others see that you are someone that others trust. LinkedIn lets you show those connections. A blog can show people a little or a lot of who you are as a person. Start your own blog and if you don't like it, shut it down and start another one. Relationship is a big factor that differentiates you from other people. Let people know about you so they can see why you're such a great choice.

With coaching and personal growth seminars, you can improve your skills in dealing with people and enjoying what you're doing and learning to do what you enjoy. When people see that you're excited or inspired by what you do, it attracts people to you.
I know of a very successful man who said, "If you're only excited on the inside, you're not really excited." When you are making a difference doing something that's a good fit for you or truly doing what you're passionate about or doing your life's work, people notice and some will want to be a part of it. After a couple thousand words at InstantBuzz and a couple pounds of food at the in-laws, it seems like I must have something to say at my own blog...So here I am. Stuffed, with the new nephew done screaming [, poor baby,] and the other males huddled in front of the TV playing Gauntlet, I am staring at this Dell screen wondering what it was that I had to say.

Well, one place that a lot of people overlook is the library. Whenever I'm having internet challenges, there are plenty of net connections at the library. I enjoy reading stuff like Harvard Business Review which saves you in the neighborhood of $100 a year versus a subscription. Some truly great articles with some imaginative, yet academically sound ideas. If someone says, "Where'd you hear that?", Harvard Business Review is a pretty impressive source.

The most recent article that caught my eye was about negotiation. There have been lots of books written on negotiation with titles along the lines of Negotiate Anything. What this article mentioned was most people aren't thinking about the relationship of the parties after the negotiations. You don't want to kill the relationship, which some companies do by extracting the most favorable terms for themselves but leaving the other party in a bad way. Some companies hire people especially for the negotiations that have no financial stake in how things turn out later. The hired gun negotiates and is gone. Is it possible that some of us negotiate this way, too? It's only human nature that there would be some seriously ruffled feathers for the side that got the short end of the stick. We need to pay attention to how both sides feel about what they're getting or the partnership could be short-lived. It's also a good way to kill repeat business.

I hope that I am conveying how dynamic LinkedIn.com is. It won't look very impressive if you sign up on your own because you're not connected to anyone. I sent an invitation to Dan from the Cannon Training group when I got home last night and he just added himself to my LinkedIn.com group a couple minutes ago. LinkedIn shows me that I have 83 people directly connected - 1st degree.
2nd degree - 2600 +
3rd degree - 72,500 +
4th degree - 444,000 +
Whole network with profiles listed on LinkedIn - 519,200 +
In addition, there are around 37,000 brave souls who will allow anyone to contact them.
Oh, I guess I didn't really mention that we act as screeners for each other. Except for the brave souls, you send your request to someone who is not on your first degree
through the person that connects you to them, as in the example I mentioned yesterday and the real-life example that Patricia gave in her comments. [Wow, she's actually close to someone who knows Nelson Mandella and the Dalai Lama! Some of you might be saying, "We are all close to everyone on the planet, maybe 6 degrees." But, do you know who connects you to a specific person? There's the rub.]
Just to clarify, Dan is now connected to me directly and he can search the network of people up to his fourth degree through me. When he sees someone like say, Tim Hansen, who he can help or vice-versa, he sends the request through me and I forward the request if I know that it's relevant to what Tim is looking for. I have personally sent probably 25 or 30 requests since March and only two have been sent back by the intermediaries. People have made a lot fewer requests of me.
Some of you may question the value of having people in your network who don't obviously seem to benefit you and vice-versa. Let's say you do business in Nova Scotia in a 50 mile radius. Well, I live in San Diego County and the guy who got me involved with LinkedIn is Gary in Vietnam. Through Gary I contacted a guy in Thailand last week related to a non-profit that I want to start to help get scholarship monies into the hands of teens. Within 48 hours I was directly connected to the guy in Thailand and I sent HIM a request today because he's connected to a tech talent guy who lives in San Diego County. So, if you live in Nova Scotia there still might be someone who knows someone who knows someone in Nova Scotia. [You there, Eber?]

Hopefully everyone realizes the power of networking [here I'm talking about connecting human to human] with regard to business and career. I love LinkedIn.com and have over 500,000 people in my four degrees. Over the weekend I made contact with a former Toastmaster in Thailand through a guy in Vietnam who I've never met face-to-face. This morning a woman from the Netherlands added herself to my first degree. Wondering about "degrees"? It's related to Six Degrees of Separation, the idea that virtually anyone on Earth is only six degrees from you. Example: You know Jane next door who knows Bill in Arizona who knows me in California who knows Patricia in the Netherlands who knows Stephen in London who knows Angela at Cambridge who knows Tony Blair, Prime Minister of the U.K. And, if this were real, you would actually only be 4 degrees from Tony Blair because you know me.
I recently met a guy while pumping gas who I introduced to Tony Dohrmann at Lasershield.net and he is off and running as a Regional Distributor with that company. I met him on Sunday evening and by Wednesday he had signed the paperwork and had his first salesperson on his team. If we don't meet, it's very unlikely that he meets Tony. You can be this helpful to people in your life and vice-versa - more often than is currently the case. LinkedIn helps you do it fast, but you need an invitation to be connected to someone. Wow!
I'm finally ready to blog! After publishing WeAreGrowing at YahooGroups [I have forgotten the predecessor I started with...] for a few years, I am really ready to go for it with a blog or two [or three?]. This site says that it will let me control the content enough to keep out the goofballs who only seem to want to post !#&*@!#&* or something like it. We'll all see together. That is, if any of you follow me from Yahoogroups! Ha!
